I In My Own Words

My grandmother's name
was Hakam Devi.

"My grandmother's name was Hakam Devi. She was a young girl when India was partitioned and a new country was born - and her family had to leave everything they had ever known. I grew up listening to her stories - the land they left behind, the jewellery buried in the ground before they ran, the rivers that ran red that year. She never stopped talking about the smell of mitti. The earth of home after rain. Virsaa 1947 was born from the stories she told me, from the memories she carried. Because that feeling - of leaving home, of carrying your roots somewhere new, of belonging to a place you may never return to - is not just her story. It is the story of millions of us, in every generation, who migrate for work, for love, for opportunity, for a better life, for the future." - Paras, Founder - Virsaa 1947
